As we craft a proposed AI policy for Atlanta Public Schools, we’re being intentional about protecting students, student data, independent thinking, the integrity of learning, and the teaching profession itself.
We’ve studied emerging best practices across the country, considered student-led policy work, and will continue engaging students, educators, families, and our community.
Some lines matter to me:
AI should never replace a certified teacher, become an AI “co-teacher,” or justify eliminating teaching positions. Technology can support teachers. It should never become the teacher.
Students should do the thinking they’re supposed to be learning to do. Generative AI should be reserved for specifically authorized instructional purposes, including intentional AI-literacy and prompt-engineering experiences.
Students also deserve due process. An AI detector should never automatically determine misconduct. Human review matters.
And student privacy is non-negotiable. Parents deserve transparency about what happens to their children’s data, and APS has already established safeguards around student data today.
We cannot wait until AI fundamentally reshapes education and THEN decide we need rules.
We need to address AI head-on.
Not because we’re anti-AI.
Because we’re pro-student, pro-teacher, pro-thinking, pro-privacy and pro-human.
The policy is still being crafted, and there will be opportunities for our community to help make it stronger.
We can get this right together.
LET’S MAKE HISTORY.
